Hello Kansas City! Welcome back to the Bespoke Automotive Refinement Podcast. We’re so glad that you joined us on this beautiful, wonderful May day.
The sun is shining, the trees are in bloom, the grass is green, and we’re just living our best lives after a wonderful Mother’s Day. Today we’re going to be talking about cars, exotic cars, and supercars, and I don’t know if there’s anybody in this whole world that knows more about cars than our founder, Thomas Till. He literally lives and breathes cars.
It’s what he goes to bed thinking about, it’s what he wakes up thinking about, and it’s what he does all day. Cars. So if you ever want to talk to him about cars, feel free to reach out to us at 620-282-0402. We would love to answer any questions you may have about Kansas City car detailing, Kansas City ceramic coating, Kansas City paint correction, and any of our other Kansas City car detailing packages.
Now I’m going to go through some questions for you, Thomas. Are you ready?
I’m ready.
Number one, what was the first exotic car you ever fell in love with?
The first exotic car I ever fell in love with was the early Lamborghini Murcielago. So not the LP car, but the pre-LP Lamborghini Murcielago. When I was a little kid, I think it was my mom or my dad who got me this book, and it just said “Supercars” on it. It basically had all of the different cars, all the different exotic cars at the time, and this was in the early 2000s.
Switching through the photos, I’m sure we could find a picture of that exact photo, but it was the Giallo Modena, I think was the name of that yellow. I could be wrong, but it was a yellow Murcielago, and it was parked on some rocks, like some red rocks, almost like they just dropped this car down in the bottom of the Grand Canyon. There was no road around it. It was just sitting there with the doors up, and that car would have been brand new back then.
Ever since then, that car made me fall in love with yellow, for one, and I’ve always loved yellow cars since then. But I’ve also always had an affliction with Lamborghini Murcielagos. My dream Lamborghini is an Aventador SVJ, but if you parked a yellow SVJ next to a yellow pre-LP Murcielago, I’d probably take the Murcielago just because of that nostalgic feeling. That’s the first supercar I ever fell in love with.
And I’ve worked on a few of them. It was actually the first Lamborghini I ever drove. It was a Murcielago in Grigio Telesto, the same color as the press car that the U.S. had. So definitely a Lamborghini Murcielago.
All right, number two, if you could own any car, sky’s the limit, no budget, what would it be? Oh man, you’re like, “If the sky’s the limit and no budget, can I own 20 cars?”
Yeah exactly, it wouldn’t be one. That’s my problem. It’s never one, it’s always multiples. I’m a real big fan of the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport. I think it’s one of the most beautiful cars. I think 320 miles an hour is the top speed, maybe 320, 350, it’s something crazy. And I’m a huge fan of the way the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport looks.
Another one would be the Pagani Huayra BC. I think that car is more beautiful than a Bugatti Chiron, but it’s definitely not as fast. Part of my affliction with supercars is not really just the way they look, but how fast they are. The emotion you get from driving one, the sound, the feel, the smell. So it would definitely be a toss-up between those two.
If you could only drive one car, solo uno, for the rest of your life, what would be the only car you could ever drive? And again, sky’s the limit. It can be whatever you want, but you can only drive one.
Well at that point, what’s life look like? Do I still do what I do now? Do we live in Florida? Do we live where we live now in Missouri? That’s part of the issue. Every time I hear that question, it depends on where you’re at and your situation in life.
What’s your ultimate dream car? Like that, basically.
Like, ultimate dream car and I also don’t work?
Yep.
Honestly, it’d be the car that I’m trying to buy right now.
Yeah?
Yeah, if that was the only car I could ever have forever, it would be that, because of the space, because of the emotion I get from it, the emotional attachment I have to it, and the fact that it’s really, really, really fast.
Yeah, it would be not a, but the Velocity Yellow C6 Z06. That, like, the car.
For sure. Next question, what car do you think is overrated? Like, it’s not as great as people think it is.
The C8 Corvette. I think the C8’s overrated. I mean, I have a weird thing with the C8 because I really like the way that they look, but I get so tired of seeing them everywhere.
They’re everywhere. I mean, I’ve seen three of them today on a road trip through two roads in Arkansas. I don’t think they’re special in the way that, like, I think the people buying C8 Corvettes right now are, I hate saying this, but they’re trying to pose for, like, “I look like I have money because I could afford a $50,000 car.” You know what I mean?
Yeah.
Because they look expensive, but they’re really not. Also, they’re just horrifically slow. When my Z06 was stock, the first C8 I ever saw on the road, I waxed it. Just absolutely smoked it on the highway, and I’ve never actually lost to a C8.
So, I think they’re overrated. I think they look cool. There’s no rarity factor to them. The ZR1 takes two years to get one, but they’ve already been seen driving around the road. I mean, I saw one in Tulsa last weekend.
And so, there’s not a limited production of them. They’re just hard to get an allocation for. So, I don’t know. I don’t think the C8 is that special. I think they’re really cool, but I think they’re way overrated.
What car do you think is underrated? Like, people don’t think it’s as awesome as it really is.
You know, I would have said the C6 Z06, but seeing what the market’s literally done in the last two weeks, they’ve shot up even more. I think people are really beginning to realize that you can pay what was $30,000, now $60,000, to buy a car that can beat a $900,000 hypercar.
And they’re going up, but I wouldn’t say they’re underrated anymore. Honestly, it’s not even a race car. It’s not even a fast car, but it’s a Porsche Boxster. They’re cheap. They’re reliable. They’re fun. They’re mid-engine.
I think the Porsche Boxster and the Porsche Cayman, which are basically the same thing, the Cayman just has a roof, are really underrated. I think you can have a lot of fun with them for the money. They’re not fast, but they’re really, really, really fun cars to drive. You can buy a clean mid-engine Porsche for $12,000. I think that’s underrated.
