Hello, Kansas City and welcome back to the Bespoke Automotive Refinement Podcast. We are your one-stop shop for all things detailing, car detailing, Kansas City car detailing, Kansas City paint correction. Guys, we are so excited to have you on.

You know, right now we’re on our way to go do a Ferrari 458. We’re actually in the car right now, headed out there. The Ferrari that we’re going to be working on this week is a… I don’t want to call it a high mileage 458 because I wouldn’t say it’s very high miles.

I would say, however, that this Ferrari has seen a lot of spirited driving. It has a lot of hard miles put on it. So, this is a true rally car, if you will.

And when I say rally car, I don’t mean like WRC. You know, it’s not drifting around dirt roads. It’s not doing anything like that.

But this Ferrari has been driven on like Gold Rush, Gumball, a lot of Ferrari rallies. And you can definitely tell by looking at the car. I mean, the whole front end of it is pretty rashed up.

You know, the sides of it are pretty beat up. So, the owner was unaware until recently the value spike of these cars. So, she went and looked at getting a Ferrari 296 GTB.

Took it to a Ferrari dealer. And come to find out, they wanted to do a straight across trade with her. And so, she was unaware that the value of 458s have gone up that much.

So, she just told me, she said, well, if I have this car that’s worth all this money, I’d really like to keep it looking nice again. So, we’re going to be bringing the car back to new. Now, obviously, we don’t do paint work.

So, meaning we’re not going to be re-spraying the car. And I told her, you know, if she wants to keep the original paint, if she wants to keep the original finish, having the car completely re-sprayed is not a good idea. Because for the rest of the car’s life, it will very clearly look as though it was re-sprayed.

However, doing a paint correction on this car after filling in a bunch of rock chips is going to make it look a lot better, per se. But, my customer wanted to know if she could put touch-up paint over clear bra or PPF. Now, the answer to that question, first of all, is that the proper thing to do? Absolutely not.

That is not the right thing to do. And, you know, you can judge a car as a detailer. I would judge another detailer for putting touch-up paint over PPF.

However, if my customer asks me to do something for them, the way that I view this is they are the one that’s paying me to do the job. And they are the one that wants me to put the touch-up paint over the PPF. So, that is exactly what I’m going to do for her.

So, yes, this car will be getting touch-up paint on top of the PPF. And the reason why is the car has a stripe on it. It’s an Italian flag stripe.

But it’s a specific kind of stripe that they don’t make anymore. And the stripe is over the top of the PPF. And she understands that if she takes the PPF off, that that stripe is going to have to come off with it.

And the stripe is still in really good condition. So, she opted to have me PPF the, or touch-up paint the PPF. So, that’s what we’re doing to this car.

Now, this car also has a lot of solvent pop in it, which happens with age. The car I’m driving right now, the 2006 Corvette Z06, it has solvent pop on the front bumper. And I have also opted to look into repainting this car.

You know, it costs about $15,000. The thing I’m thinking of is right now I’m on a four-lane highway. It’s 8 o’clock in the morning.

There’s cars on each side of me. There’s a semi right in front of me. I’m sure this car is going to get a rock chip or two in it from this drive alone.

So, if I was going to buy this car and let it sit in a garage and respray it and never sell it again, absolutely. I think that’s worth it. Being that I love driving this car, I try to drive it almost every day, even if it’s just down the street or, you know, if I take it to the gym in the morning.

Like, I try to drive this car every day. There’s no reason to get this car repainted because at the end of the day, it’s not a low-mile car. I bought this car with low miles, and the decision that I made when I bought it was it’s either going to be a garage queen that I drive once a week, maybe once every two weeks in perfect condition, or I’m going to put a lot of miles on it and make a lot of memories.

And this car I chose to make a lot of memories with. Well, like this car, my client on the Ferrari that we’re working on today, she chose to do the exact same thing. You know, she chose to drive her car, put miles on her car, and the downside to that is it’s not perfect.

The plus side to that is she’s made a lot of memories with that car. Now, once we’re done with the touch-up paint, which we actually finished yesterday, so the touch-up paint’s already completed over the entire car, not just the PPF, but ironically, the pillars that go around the windshield were also really bad. So we finished that up as well, got the pillars looking better, and now we are going to be cutting the car.

So, you know, obviously doing a compound, wet-sanding, well, not in that order, obviously, you’re going to wet-sand, compound, and polish. We’re going to be doing that and then finishing it off with a ceramic coating. And again, she’s in a position right now where either she wants to leave the PPF on, leave the stripe on, keep the car, and then use it, and then still get her 296 GTB, which, you know, I’m opting for.

I want her to get this 296. I actually think it’d be really cool if she got this 296. Or, you know, she can sell it and, you know, I told her I think she needs to get an SF90.

That’s just my opinion.
