I’m the founder and owner of Bespoke Refinement and you know today we’re going to be, I was inspired to do this podcast based upon a couple new YouTube channels that I’ve been watching lately. You know, they really lean into the old aesthetic and I realized watching these videos and listening to these videos that that’s kind of my genre, that I like old things. You know, I like the look of a pair of Jordan Air 1s.
I like the era where men wore wife beaters and long shorts and snapbacks backwards and were absolutely yoked. And I love the era of chrome wheels on a modern sports car. You know, nothing makes me happier than seeing a V12, an early 2000s V12 Lamborghini Murcielago with chrome wheels.
I absolutely love that. And so upon realizing that I’m just an old soul stuck in the early 2000s, I like that vibe. I like that aesthetic.
I’ll always like that aesthetic and that vibe. So, what are some of my favorite cars from other eras? And if I could go back into the 90s and buy a car at a certain budget and it be like a one size fits all, meaning like a one car solution, what would it be? And so that’s going to be today’s segment. So, the first car on this list, and by the way, we’re going to be doing the 80s, so we’re going to be doing the 1980s one car solution.
And the first car on my list is a BMW E30. Now the BMW E30, whether it’s a 325i or the M3, I love that aesthetic. I think that that aesthetic, ergonomically on the exterior and the interior, that car is timeless.
It looked like a classic when it came out new. And to this day, whenever I see one, it puts a smile on my face. I think it’s one of the best looking German cars ever made.
I think that they’re affordable. I think that they’re reliable. I think that if you were to buy a old German car as like a daily driver, you know, if you lived in Southern California, you didn’t have a whole lot of stuff that you had to put in your car, you know, you just needed two seats, an engine and some wheels, a BMW M30, or excuse me, a BMW E30.
It’s one of the best. So that’s number one on the list. Number two on the list for me is going to be the Porsche 944 Turbo.
Now, there’s a movie that came out, and I don’t know why I can’t think of it right now, but there’s a very like famous scene from a movie from the 80s where this guy is standing in front of this girl’s house. He’s got a boombox and his Porsche 944 standing behind him. And I think that that car is like the most 80s thing ever.
My mom drove a 944 Turbo before she ever even met my dad. A guy that she dated back in the day drove a 944 Turbo. And to be real, I think my mom’s the one that I get my car infatuation from.
I certainly don’t get it from my father. But I think the 944 was a very underrated and underappreciated car then, and I still think it is now, especially the Turbo. Just because it wasn’t a 911, it didn’t get the appreciation that it deserved.
But to that point, that’s kind of the Porsche standard is nothing that isn’t a 911 gets the true appreciation unless it’s a Carrera GT or a 918 Spyder, you know, a Cayman or a Boxster is never going to get the love that the 911 gets. And to that point, I don’t even give the Boxster or the Cayman as much love as it really deserves. But back to the 80s thing, the 944 Turbo, one of the best cars I think Porsche ever came out with in the 1980s.
Next on my list is the Mercedes 300 SL. Now, wait a minute, did I say that right? I don’t think it’s a 300 SL now that I think about it. Oh, it’s the Mercedes SL.
It’s that car, that two door, two seater convertible that they made from like the 60s up into the 80s. They finished making these cars in the 80s. And I think that they are incredible.
I think that they aged really well. I think that they have a aesthetic that is very classic. Again, is it a car that you want to drive every day? Probably not.
But if you had to, it’s a very reliable car. You know, they made literal millions of these cars. So there’s no way that you can ever run out of parts for these things.
They’re just everywhere. So the 300 SL is definitely one for me that I think is an amazing, amazing car. Next on my list is going to be the Datsun 240Z.
Now, I know that car is predominantly a 70s car, but I had to throw it in there because I love the way that car looks. And I forgot how much I love the way that car looks until I literally saw one today in traffic. I was on my way to a Kansas City car detailing client’s house to perform a Kansas City paint correction service, and I saw one of these.
And immediately when I saw it, my first thought was, what is that beautiful looking classic car? And I kind of had to bob and weave in traffic because I wanted to get close to it. And I don’t know why I didn’t realize what it was at the time. It just didn’t click until I saw that rear quarter window and I saw the long front nose on it that I recognized that that was a Datsun 240.
I don’t think that those cars now get the appreciation that they deserve. I don’t think that they did then. I know that they got it then, but I don’t think that they they got it now.
But that car is what put these Z cars on the map with Nissan and with Datsun. And so I’ll always be a very big fan of the 240Z and all the Z cars for that matter. I mean, the new 400Z, what a cool car.
