Hello Kansas City, welcome back to the Spoke Automotive Refinement Podcast. You’re number one go-to Kansas City car detailing podcast. We absolutely love talking about Kansas City car detailing services and any real need that you might need for your vehicle here in Kansas City.
Thomas grew up in Kansas, loves this whole area, big Twos fans, so we’re so glad that you joined us today on a summer day. Today we’re going to be continuing something we had talked about in a previous podcast, which was comparing the top 20 vintage cars and their modern equivalent today. Now some of these Thomas agrees with, some of them they don’t, so let us know in the comments below how you feel.
Feel free to reach out to us on Instagram, Facebook with any cars that you would like us to talk about and break down as well. This next one, I did not come up with, it’s just next on the list, but I feel like this is perfect for what you’re doing today, which is working on this specific car. It’s not me, that’s not what we’re working on today, but it’s in the garage that you’re working on.
It’s a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. What are the odds of that? I’m literally looking at one right now. That’s wild and it’s so rare of a car.
Yeah, no, I mean, I think that for the era, this is one of the best looking cars from the 50s. If you look at the equivalent, which is a 50s Corvette, which ironically there’s one parked right next to it, this car looks so exotic. It looks so exotic.
I mean, I can’t imagine living in the 1950s and someone pulling up next to me in one of these or someone pulling up at a restaurant in one of these thinking, what on earth? That looks like that could have come out of space. It’s very retro looking. It really taps into that idea that after World War II, all of these manufacturers were trying to create something that looked modern and retro and futuristic, but they were still using chrome trim around the windows and chrome trim on the side vents.
It’s a very, very iconic looking car. I imagine that the modern day equivalent, do they have the modern day equivalent in there? They do. The modern? Okay.
I imagine it’s one of two. It’s either going to be a SL55. No, not SL55.
A Mercedes AMG SL, which also has the gold wing doors, or it’s going to be a Mercedes AMG GT. They have a 2024 Mercedes AMG GT Coupe. Yep.
AMG GT Coupe. That’s awesome. I actually just had a friend that bought one of those the other day, sent me a picture of it.
I love that car. It’s definitely on the list of something that I want to own someday. If you have $50,000 to $80,000, you can really get a very good looking, very fun, fast, reliable sports car.
I think that the AMG GT Coupe is, if you look at one and then you look at what the 300 SL gullwing looks like, they look so similar. Yeah. That’s definitely one on the list that I would love to own someday.
Next up on the list is a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. And it’s equivalent- The Z28. Z28.
And I’m imagining, before you say it, it’s going to be a Camaro, either an SS or a ZL1. It is a Camaro ZL1. Good job.
Yep. Yep. Yeah.
Actually, I’ve performed several Kansas City Car Detailing services on both the first gen Camaro Z28s, as well as modern day Camaro ZL1s. I actually, I don’t know if you know this or not, Avery, but I bought a ZL1 in 2018. Before I bought my ZL6, I had a really good friend who had a white ZL1 that had a lot of work done to it.
We actually saw that car at a street car takeover a couple of weeks ago. You remember that? Yes, I do. That white Camaro.
And so I bought that car instead of my ZL6. But no, I mean, Camaros are unique for me because I love the old ones, but I feel like it feels really weird buying something like a ZL1 that has the performance of the ZL6, which is essentially what it is. It’s a Camaro that has the ZL6 engine and transmission.
But so many people will buy a V6 Camaro and then think it’s a sports car. And it’s like, well, it’s really just a two-door commuter car that doesn’t have any performance. So when you park a ZL1 next to a V6 Camaro, it’s like, well, you don’t really feel special.
You know what I mean? Yeah. It looks like every other Camaro out there. And Camaros are so mainstream.
I don’t have much desire to be a Camaro owner of a newer one, but the older ones are iconic. I love the way they look, especially the Z28. All right.
Next up on the list, we have, oh, you’re going to like this one, a 1971 Nissan Skyline GTR. Oh, yeah. Yep, that is a… I do.
I don’t know a whole lot about the R31s, which is probably what that one is. But it’s so cool how a company like Nissan that was known for making regular, everyday commuter cars created the Skyline. Because when you see it, you don’t really think it’s a cool-looking car, but they are.
Every Skyline GTR that’s ever come out has always outperformed the supercar of its time. The new GTRs, the R35, performs with Ferrari, Lamborghini. Actually, when the 2009 R35 GTR came out, it had a quicker zero to 60 than a Bugatti Veyron, which was insane that Nissan built a car that could do that.
So I love the GTR. When I see a GTR, I probably get more excited about seeing a GTR than seeing a Ferrari or a Lamborghini or even a 911 Turbo. It’s true.
I think he really does. I’ve been in the car with him. So it’s a comparison, do you have any guesses for the comparison? Well, it’s going to be the R35 GTR.
It might be the R34. So it would either be in the 90s range, but I’m going to imagine it’s going to be in the 2009 or newer. They’ve been making the R35 since 2009.
So it’s going to be a 2009 or newer Nissan Skyline GTR. So they actually have a Nissan GTR NISMO. NISMO.
Yep. Yep. In what years? This is 2024.
- So 2009 or newer. They’ve been making that car since 2009.
Yeah. So I think they dumped the Skyline name in 2009, but some people still refer to it as a Skyline. Others just refer to it as a GTR.
And then the NISMO is Nissan’s motorsports division. So the NISMO is kind of like how they take a Ford Mustang and they turn it into a Shelby, which makes it really fast. The GTR NISMO is the Shelby equivalent of the Nissan GTR.
The problem that I have with the GTR NISMO is I always thought I wanted one. And I took my modified C6 Z06 to a half mile event and I absolutely spanked a R35 GTR NISMO. And after that, I was like, I don’t know if I could ever justify owning one of these because my Corvette outperformed one.
Granted, the car was modified, but a beautiful car regardless. I love the way they look. In the picture that you’re seeing, does it have the red line outline around the bottom of it? This one doesn’t have a picture, but I bet so.
So I’m just going to have to Google it and see what that looks like. That’s really cool. Absolutely.
