Today on the show we’re talking about the top supercars and it’s honestly one of our favorite topics. We love talking about supercars. Number 14 on the list is the Ford GT. Why it matters: homage to the GT40 with modern engineering and race success. Fun fact: the 2017 version won Le Mans 50 years after the original GT40 first win. The first fast car that I ever rode in was a Ford GT.

Oh really? Yep, so my next door neighbor growing up was a car collector and he was big into Mustangs and Shelbys and I think that’s why I like older Mustangs and Shelbys because I saw them a lot as a kid. My neighbor next door would be outside washing them, and in 2004 when they brought the Ford GT back, he got one. It was like 160 grand new, which no one in my small little one-horse town that I grew up in could fathom someone paying that much for a car. He was a client of my dad’s and they were buddies, and every year he would hold a Mustangs and Fords meet where he would rent the drag strip out in my hometown. My dad took me out there and he let me sit in it and it was so cool. I was about nine years old and he told my dad, “Well, if you’re comfortable with it, I’ll take him for a ride down the drag strip.” And I bet you loved that.

So that was the first really fast car I’d ever ridden in, and I kind of chased that feeling after I got my first car and started racing. I was chasing that feeling of acceleration. I obviously ended up owning cars that were faster, but it’s kind of interesting—the C6 Z06 was actually built to beat that Ford GT, and it did. It lapped the Nürburgring quicker. So it was kind of cool that I got to own a car that was faster on the track than the first car that captured me. Wow. So yeah, I love the Ford GT. It holds a special place in my heart.

Number 15 is a Lamborghini Countach. Why it matters: poster car of the 80s, defined supercar styling for a generation. Fun fact: the name Countach is a Piedmontese expression of astonishment, like “wow.” I didn’t know that. The Countach was the first Lamborghini that ever had the scissor doors. Really? Yep. When you think of Lamborghini you think of that wedge shape, and that was the first one that had it.

I have performed a Kansas City car detailing service on a Countach. My friend—the same one who just sold the Bugatti—actually bought a Countach and a Diablo in a package deal from the same guy on the same day. This neurosurgeon in Wichita called him and said, “I have some cars I think you should come look at.” He’d never heard of the guy, the guy had never heard of him, but he goes to his house and looks at these cars. The seller said, “The only way I’ll sell you these is if you buy them both.” So he ends up buying a Countach and a Diablo in the same day. At that point he really didn’t have the money to do it, but he figured out a way—he refinanced his home to make it happen. He literally bought both in the same day.

He FaceTimed me that night from his driveway at like 11:30 and just turned the camera and said, “I bought them both.” I did get to work on that car, which he actually had some fun with. There’s a video of one snowy day when he backed it out into his cul-de-sac, lifted the doors up, and was doing donuts in the snow in his white Countach. Personally, I don’t think I would ever want to own a Countach—they’re pretty clunky—but they’re still gorgeous cars.

He bought both the Diablo and the Countach for $200,000 total. He sold the Diablo for $350,000 and the Countach for $780,000. So he made close to a million dollars on that sale, and he was pretty excited that day. That car was actually featured at Amelia Island and also at Monterey Car Week. Pretty amazing.

Next up on the list is a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. Why it matters: a luxurious grand tourer with a supercharged V8 and F1 influence. Fun fact: its side exhaust shoots out flames when you downshift aggressively. This is a funny story because the same guy I just mentioned currently owns an SLR McLaren, and it’s a roadster, which is rare. It’s got to be one of the most glorious sounding cars ever.

They are really unique looking—if you saw one, you wouldn’t think it was a Mercedes. It doesn’t look like one. But it was a combined effort between Mercedes AMG and McLaren. They built the car together and they’re beautiful. I have detailed it, and it’s really cool because it’s a Mercedes with McLaren doors. The doors go up like a McLaren, but it’s a Mercedes.

Number 17 is a Jaguar XJ220. Why it matters: it was the fastest production car in the early 90s, sleek, rare, and controversial. Fun fact: originally promised with a V12 and all-wheel drive, it launched with a twin turbo V6 and rear-wheel drive. Do you remember early on when we were dating, and I told you I was working on a million dollar car? I sent you a picture of that silver car—that was an XJ220.

There’s only one XJ220 registered in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, or Nebraska. The car lives here in Kansas City. That’s what that was—an XJ220. Honestly, it’s a total crap box. The buttons on the air conditioner had broken off, and it’s very plasticky, but still a really cool car.
