Hello Kansas City, welcome back to the Bespoke Automotive Refinement Podcast, your #1 Kansas City car detailing podcast. We’re so glad that you’ve joined us on this beautiful, wonderful fall night to talk more about Kansas City car detailing. Tonight we’re going to be talking about our craziest client cars.

Stories that you may or may not believe. Thomas, are you ready? I’m ready. Number one, what’s the most jaw-dropping car that’s ever rolled into Bespoke? I got two.

One, as far as actual jaw-dropping beauty, would be a 1957 Chevy Cameo. Sat in our garage when I did in our garage. It is, it both voted the most beautiful hot rod and, in my opinion, actually is the most beautiful hot rod truck ever.

And then jaw-dropping as far as rare, one-off, would be a Mercedes 300 SL Golden. About a 10. Actually, one sold at Monterey Car Week for $12 million, so I guess now this thing’s worth $12 million.

Wow. And I actually touched it the other day. Isn’t that wild? Yeah.

Number two, have you ever had to turn down a car because it was too risky to touch? I have. I have. It was a Ferrari F40.

Really? Yeah. So, one of the ways that Ferrari kept that car down in weight was they painted, they sprayed the paint on very thin. So, you know, you really only have one paint correction in an F40.

And this one, in particular, had already been paint corrected once. It came in from California. The guy wanted it done.

The corners of the edges of the car were already thinned down. Like, there were a lot of very deep scratches. I knew I couldn’t get out of it.

And I knew that if I burned the paint on a $5 million car, it would not be good. So, I actually did turn down working on a real F40 LM. Next question, have you ever had a client who treated their Ferrari like an old pickup, or like a daily driver, like this beautiful, wonderful car is driven as if it was somebody’s daily drive? Two things I have.

And I would actually say that in the world of owning a supercar, that is me. I mean, I love taking care of vehicles. And I think there’s people that own pickup trucks that still take very good care of them, make sure that they’re up to date on maintenance, keep them clean, but drive them every day.

No. And I would say that, yeah, there’s quite a few of them, actually. I admire that more than someone who buys a vehicle and it sits in their garage, doesn’t get driven.

I can’t stand that. I mean, I get it if it’s like an old vehicle that appreciated so heavily in value, and it’s so expensive, like parts are completely unattainable to fix. Yeah, that makes sense, to not drive it.

But if it’s a 10-year-old or a five-year-old Ferrari that you got under warranty, drive that damn thing, man. Put miles on it. Next question.

What’s the most delicate part of detailing a Ferrari that people don’t realize? Or any like exotic supercar? Ferrari’s finicky because, I mean, you got to be careful about how you open the door handle on one because of how flimsy they are. They’re very flimsy cars, and I think that’s because they’re handmade, and I think that’s because they can be flimsy. I think a Ferrari can be poorly built unless they still sell for a lot of money because of the name.

Branding’s crazy. I mean, when you were drawing some of those Ferraris, did you notice some of them felt loose? Yep. The grilles felt loose.

Like, what did you notice? Yeah, I mean, I could definitely like, number one, whenever I’m working on cars that expensive, that special, that if you did something to it, you’d have to send it back to Italy. Yeah, I definitely noticed some things. I’m like, oh, that doesn’t make me feel safe, you know, touching.

Lamborghini and Porsche aren’t that way. When you ride that Porsche, it felt tight, didn’t it? That wing on that GT2 RS. Yeah, strong.

There’s videos of people standing on those things, like, doing this. Like, they are very strong. That’s why I love Porsche.

A Corvette, like, is kind of similar to Ferrari in that way. Like, they are kind of flimsy, but it’s a Corvette. Yeah.

It’s like, you can go to a Chevy dealer and get one identical to it the next day. So, anyways. Yeah.

How do you mentally prepare before working on something worth half a million dollars? Or a million dollars? Or more than a million dollars? It’s interesting. The first Ferrari I ever worked on was, remember that old vintage Ferrari that was on the rally? That yellow one? The first Ferrari I ever worked on was that same model. It was still a high-dollar car, but it was like, that’s what it was.

And I remember I was 20 years old. I was scared. Like, I was like, walking around the car with my polisher like this.

Like, where do I start? Where do I start? First Ferrari. Where do I start? Now, it’s almost like, if you got, do you know what the Jordan Dior’s are? Air Jordan Dior’s? Uh-uh. Okay, it’s a pair of Air Jordans, but Dior, you know what Dior is? Brand.

Oh, yes. Uh-huh. Yep.

Um, they made a pair of Air Jordans, and they’re like $12,000 for a pair of shoes. Wow. But you still tie them like any other shoe.

Yeah. It’s kind of like that. It’s like, if you tie your shoes so many times, but you’re wearing, you know, one day you’re wearing a pair of Yeezys, and the next day you’re gonna wear a pair of, you know, Adidas flat bottoms like I’m wearing right now, and the next day you put on a pair Dior Jordans, you’re gonna tie them exactly the same.

So I really don’t think about it. Um, when we were washing all those Ferraris, did you understand how you can get jaded? Yeah. Where you’re like, touching a million dollar car, but you’re tired and you want to get it done.

You’re not even thinking about the fact that you’re working on a million dollar Ferrari. You’re thinking about, get to the next one. Yeah, it’s true.

So you get jaded pretty quick. Yep, I would agree with that. Um, what do owners of exotics have in common mindset-wise? I would say they care about their vehicle looking good.

Um, it’s interesting. I think a lot of them, a lot of people that have high-end cars are actually not overweight. That’s interesting.

Did you notice any heavy, overweight people on the rally? Cars are kind of hard to get in and out of, so that kind of makes sense. Yeah, but like, I can think of a couple guys that were pretty heavy. But for the most part, I think having a nice car, keeping your body right, and keeping your, um, keeping your, you know, your finances in check are all kind of go together.
