We are extremely blessed because we get to listen and talk to the one and only Thomas Thill, the founder and creator of Bespoke Automotive Refinement, the premier Kansas City car detailing company in the area. We are so glad that you had to join us today. Oh, I’m so glad to be here.
Thank you for bringing me on. Today we’re going to be talking about something that I actually don’t know a whole lot about, and I’m excited to learn more about what the service is and then the benefit it has for different kinds of cars. Can you tell our audience a little bit about iron remover?
Yeah, so today I’m going to be talking about iron remover.
It’s something that I use fairly regularly. Today I used it in a different type of way. Something that was recommended to me by another professional detailer said, try it this way, and I did.
It completely changed the detailing process. It literally shaved two hours off of my wash process today. That’s a big difference.
It was huge. Iron remover is a product that goes… It’s a very, very strong chemical that loosens up any contaminants on the paint or stuck to the paint. So today I was working on a Range Rover, and this Range Rover looked like it had literally never been hand washed before its life, and it probably hadn’t.
It had a lot of road grime stuck to it. It had a lot of tar stuck to it. It was covered in contaminants, and my game plan was to hand wash it, then spray iron remover on it, and then clay bar it.
A couple weeks back, I was talking to a detailing buddy of mine, and he was talking about how he uses iron remover. He actually sprays it on the vehicle while it is still dry before he ever washes it. I thought, well, I’ll give this a shot.
So I did. I sprayed it on the car before I ever even pressure washed it. So it was totally dry, and it literally turned this white Range Rover purple.
Wow. It loosened up all of the road tar, all of the road grime, the stuff that you normally have to sit there with, you know, a tar remover and scrub off. It softened it up so much that when I pressure washed it, it was hands down the most satisfying pressure wash I’ve ever done on a car because it was a white vehicle, and it had black road tar all over it.
We’ve talked about previously how if somebody has road tar, you’re like, I can’t even really touch that because it’s hard to get off without damaging the paint. It’s a pain. Whenever I paint correct a vehicle that has road tar on it, you know, you have to get it off, and it’s a total pain.
So I sprayed it on the vehicle totally dry and left it on there for five minutes. I did it in the shade. So I sprayed it on in the shade and then pulled it in the sunlight when I actually went to wash it, and I mean it completely washed the road tar right off.
I’ve never had a vehicle do that before. Will it remove other kinds of contaminants? Yep. So it’ll remove tree sap.
It’ll remove iron deposits, which is what it’s primarily designed to do, and iron deposits are those little tiny rust spots that you find in predominantly white paint. You really only see it on white paint, but those little red specks, they look like little freckles on white paint. I’ve seen you do one before.
You sent me pictures and videos and it looked like the truck was literally bleeding and crying. Like it literally just fell right off the car. It was unbelievable.
That’s exactly what I did to this one, except that particular vehicle that I sent you those videos of, I sprayed it on wet. So what I didn’t realize is when you spray it on a wet vehicle, about only 20 percent of the product is actually getting to the paint because it’s sticking to the water. It’s not sticking to the paint.
So yeah, I mean this completely changed the car washing game for me entirely. So it took out two hours of me having to clay bar the paint, me having to use tar remover on the paint, and it’s a total game changer for sure. Is it also safer for the car? Actually it is because when you clay bar a vehicle, you’re marring the paint because you’re pulling contaminants out of the paint and then you’re continuing to rub them on the paint.
So you micro mar it and you put little fine scratches in it. So after you clay bar a vehicle, you almost always have to polish it, otherwise you’re putting scratches in the paint. No one wants to pay someone to clay bar their vehicle and then have scratched paint.
So this is way safer for the paint. You have to know what you’re doing with an iron remover. So not just anybody could take iron remover to their car? Absolutely not.
There is a threshold of it’s done and you have to get it off, or if it dries on your paint, it will etch into the paint and then you’ve basically caused the iron to seal all of the road tar and then you’re really in trouble. And it can cause etchings in the paint where then you have to actually compound them out. So I don’t recommend anyone doing it, especially, you know, DIYer because you can cause more work for yourself and doing it in direct sunlight is a big no-no.
Well, you had somebody that tried, was experimenting coating their car in direct sunlight or left their car in the sunlight afterwards and it just ruined the hood. So that particular person tried to compound their vehicle in direct sunlight, so they attempted a paint correction and they didn’t get all the compound out and the compound dried immediately and it basically caused their hood to fade, oxidize extremely quickly. So that’s definitely, there’s a lot of things when it comes to vehicle paint that you don’t want to DIY and I would say anything aside from putting on spray wax is something you don’t want to do unless you have experience with any sort of Kansas City car detailing service.
So with Bespoke, let’s say somebody was looking for this Kansas City car detailing service to be done as an iron remover, what kind of add-on is that? Is that something that’s already part of a package? Would you do that automatically in the cleaning process? How would somebody get this done? So if you book our ultimate detail or our complete detail, that’s something that is included because I have to get stuff off the paint before I put a ceramic sealant on it. So that service comes included if you book our ultimate detail or our complete detail. If that’s something you want done in the maintenance wash package, it depends.
If you’ve had the vehicle ceramic coated by us in the past and you have iron sticking to the ceramic coating, we do that free of charge. But if we’re doing just a maintenance detail, that is an add-on to our Kansas City car detailing service.
