This is a very fun business. There’s always new cars, new things, new get this scratch out or buff this thing and now it looks this much better or paint correct this vehicle and now it shines even better or this car is going to an award show, it needs to get ready. So it is always very exciting to be part of the Bespoke Automotive Refinement family.
In part one and part two, we talked about some of the top 10 best Le Mans cars of all time. We’re going to continue on with this list. Number nine is a Bentley Speed 8 from 2003.
Brought Bentley back to victory after 73 years. Stunning performance and heritage rich story. I didn’t know that Bentley created sports cars.
If you look that one up that’s also a GT1 hybrid. Okay. Bentley actually builds the engines for Bugatti.
Oh really? Let me see it. Yep that’s it. So I have a Kansas City car detailing client who tried to sell me his Bentley.
Bentley makes, they do make supercars but they’re big bodied. So they’re really heavy and the car he tried to sell me is one that I probably should have figured out how to buy. It was a Bentley Continental GT Supersport.
And what makes that different than a Continental GT is the Continental GT Supersport is actually built in the Bugatti plant. Okay. So what they do is they take a Bugatti Veyron engine which is a W16 and they break it down to a V10.
So they remove six cylinders but they leave the quad turbos. So it has four turbos. Most cars only have two turbos.
This has four turbos and a Bugatti engine. It’s got Bugatti Veyron seats and the interior is done by Bugatti. Oh wow.
And same thing as the Toyota we were talking about. No one bought them because they were like $350,000 new. So it plummeted the value of them.
I had an opportunity to buy one for $72,000 or actually it was $62,000. Whoa. It was white.
It had green stripes and it had British green interior. That’d be interesting. And I drove it.
I didn’t really like it because it was so big. It kind of felt like driving like a big Buick. Okay.
It was very plush. You would have loved it. You would have been all on board with it.
Yeah I like more luxury. It sounded like a Bugatti Veyron. It did.
It had that you know Bugatti doesn’t have like a a typical car sound where it’s like doesn’t do that. A Veyron sounds like it’s sucking in air. Okay.
It almost sounds like a jet and this had that and you know it was it was a really really cool car. I didn’t buy it. I probably should have.
He ended up trading it for a helicopter. Oh really? I traded it for a helicopter but um it was Vintz. Okay.
But um still really cool and Bentley does make some some really really unique cars every once in a while. Uh number 10 on the list. It’s taking us three podcasts to get to number 10.
That’s a like great conversations. Yeah. Very enlightening.
Um is a Mazda 787B from 1991. It was the first and only Japanese rotary engine winner. The sound of the four rotor is a stuff of legends.
It is and if you look that one up I believe that is also a GT1 car. Okay. Um and the rotary motor it’s really hard to explain what a rotary motor does.
Yep that’s it. Wait. Yep that’s it.
Um a rotary so a typical engine you have pistons that do this. Okay. That’s why an engine’s shaped like a V. A a rotary motor has a rotary in it like this.
Spins. Okay. It spins this way and as it spins it pumps the pistons.
They’re really unreliable but they’re really cool and they sound really cool. Okay. Rotary motors sound really cool.
You know that car in Tokyo Drift that was orange and black? Uh-huh. And I was like that was one of my childhood dream cars. Yeah.
That was a Mazda. Okay. Wow.
So Mazda’s made some cool stuff over the years. It’s just but I didn’t know that they won at Le Mans. Yeah.
Now number 11 I’m really surprised that this car has not come up on the list yet. Uh but it’s a Ferrari. That’s the first time Ferrari’s been on the list.
It’s a Ferrari 250 LM from 1965. The last Ferrari to win overall at Le Mans. So they didn’t the last one they won was 65.
You know that Ferrari that is uh so it when I met you and I told you and your family that the most expensive car ever to sell was 50 million. Uh-huh. Then recently one sold for 72 million.
Mm-hmm. It was a 250 LM. Oh really? Yep.
So those cars are um actually I heard a story recently about a guy that lived in like this unsuspecting neighborhood outside of Cleveland, Ohio. Like kind of in a neighborhood like this. Uh-huh.
You know nice but not like crazy nice. And there was a guy who had yep that’s it. There was a guy who had had one sitting in his garage and he paid like next to nothing for it because supposedly it didn’t have the original engine in it.
So he paid like nothing for it and he ended up selling the car and at the time that one sold for like 35 million. Uh-huh. Because and it was the highest selling 250 LM to ever.
It’s actually 250 LM or 250 GTO. It’s the same thing. But the the engine was actually the original engine.
Ferrari put a different engine in that car and that car was one of the cars that won at Le Mans because they put a smaller engine in it to reduce weight. Okay. But then they beefed up the motor so it made the same power and it and it was it won.
And this guy in Cleveland, Ohio ended up buying it for like next to nothing because it was like it doesn’t have the original engine in it. Uh-huh. And um he paid something stupid like 50 grand for it and ended up selling it for like 30 some million dollars because it was the car.
Uh-huh. And that’s the car that recently sold again for 70 some million and this guy paid 50 grand for it in the 80s. Wow.
So. It’s good to have a nose for certain things. And and he he knew when he bought it.
Mm-hmm. Wow. He just he played dumb.
That’s awesome. All right number 12. I don’t know if I know how to pronounce this one.
Um 2009. P-E-U-G-E-O-T. Peugeot.
Peugeot. 9-0-8-H-D-I-F-A-P. Peugeot makes road cars but Peugeot’s like a company like Kia or Hyundai.
They’re not sold in the U.S. They and like Volkswagen they make cars like Volkswagen’s. Um Peugeot has a really really prestigious racing pedigree and uh WRC rally. Um that’s a GT1 car.
Okay. But they do make they make cool stuff like they don’t they make the kind of cars that like if I saw one I’d flip out because I’ve never seen a Peugeot in person and you’d be like. Doesn’t look any different.
Why? Like it it just looks like a regular economy car. Yeah. But they do make some really cool hot hatches so.
That’s awesome. All right number 13 on the list. Uh Toyota.
It must be a G1 though. Um Toyota TS050 hybrid. Yep.
So in 2018 to 2020 finally gave Toyota the mod that they’d been chasing. One of the most technically advanced racers ever. Again Toyota they have a company it’s called TRD.
Stands for Toyota Racing Development. Okay. And that’s the company that builds their race cars.
Um and they also do um they also build road cars as well like Supra Celica GT and they make cool cars too.
