Thank you so much for having me on. I just love coming on here every week and talking about all of our Kansas City car detailing services and everything you need to know about Kansas City car detailing. Today we’re going to be talking about the 10 myths of common car detailing.

Now number one on the list is that dish soap is fine for washing cars. Now if you were to clean a car, would you use dish soap? I’m going to guess that they’re going to say that that’s wrong. 80% of the time it’s wrong, but 20% of the time it’s actually right.

Really? Yep. So dish soap strips the clear coat of any protectant on the paint, so like waxes, sealants. But I actually washed the car that I’m paint correcting today with dish soap.

Because it strips off all the wax so you don’t have to cut through any of the sealants or waxes that gunk up the pads. So if you’re just washing your car, just like keep it clean, never use dish soap. If you’re preparing it for a polish or a paint correction or some sort of a ceramic coating package, 100% you can use dish soap.

Yeah. Number two, waxing once a year is enough. And you don’t even really like waxing in general.

I don’t. But waxing is a form of sealant. I mean it’s better to wax your car than put nothing on it.

No, waxing’s not enough. Wax only lasts like three to five months. If you only want to do your car one time a year, some sort of a ceramic sealant or ceramic coating is really the way to go.

Because then you can do it, pay it one time, and then you don’t ever have to worry about waxing it for three to five years. Yeah, some of them are a couple months, some are a year, some are ten years, right? Yep. So you can really keep your car protected for a long time.

You really can. Number three, automatic car washes are just as good as a professional detail. Hell no.

They suck. I mean, we’ve talked about it on this show a lot, but taking your car to an automatic wash is like the car detailing equivalent to going through a McDonald’s drive-through to get food. Well, McDonald’s isn’t real food.

Automatic car wash isn’t a real car wash. It may be convenient. I’ve certainly used them before.

Is it kind of like you’re wanting to clean your teeth and you use mouthwash instead of brushing your teeth? Yes. That’s a great way of describing it. Some things, but it doesn’t actually clean your teeth.

That’s a great way of describing it. I’m sorry. As we’re on this podcast, we’re passing an Audi R8.

Oh, there you go. He really likes Audi R8s. I do.

His own Iron Man over there. All right. Number four, all scratches can be removed with polishing.

Nope. Nope. Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.

Polishing the paint fills the scratches. Paint correction or compounding and actually deep polishing will remove scratches. So that is 100% false.

Number five, you don’t need to clean new cars. It’s just brand new. No need to detail it yet.

False. Just because it’s brand new, you don’t know the life of it before you bought it. It could have been sitting out on the lot for six months outside in the sun, in the wind.

No, just because it’s brand new does not mean it shouldn’t be detailed. I actually ceramic coated and detailed a car the other day, a $90,000 car the other day, that had 300 miles on it. Wow.

No, that’s 100% a myth. And if you have a new car, reach out to us so we can also make sure that it stays protected with a ceramic coating put on it. Yes, absolutely.

Number six, water spots will go away on their own. Not opposite actually. Water spots get worse on their own.

Really? The longer water spots sit on your car, I’ve seen severe cases where water spots won’t even come out with wet sanding and they’ve had to like respray that area. Water spots are, depending on where you live, where I grew up, if you let your car get hit with a sprinkler and then you let it sit in the sun for three or four days, it’s not good. I mean, it’ll at least need to be wet sanded and it may even need to be re-cleared.

So, very bad. Don’t ever let your car get hit with a sprinkler. Really? That’s a bad thing? Horrible.

It’s worse than running it through an automatic car wash. That’s pretty bad. Number seven, clay bars scratch paint.

That’s true. That is true. You don’t really want to clay bar the paint if you’re not planning on doing some sort of polishing or paint correction after.

It’s kind of a double negative because you’re doing it to keep contaminants off the paint, but you’re still scratching it because you’re still rubbing hard, sandy contaminants that were in your paint across the paint as you’re removing it. So, yeah, it’ll definitely scratch your paint, 100%. Number eight, ceramic coatings make your car scratch-proof.

False. 100% false. The only area where ceramic coating can prevent scratching is it reduces the amount of times that you have to touch the paint while you’re drying it, and you may get less scratches from touching it less, but that’s not to say that if you brush up against it with a little button on your jeans, it’ll still scratch it.

Number nine, more product, the better. Just use extra polish or wax for better shine. False.

False. It’s not about the product, it’s about the application process. You can use a ton of polish in one area, and it’ll still look bad if you’re not using the right pads, if you’re not using proper speeds.

When it comes to polishing, it’s all about the speed and the friction created to remove those imperfections. Last one, number 10, interior detailing is just vacuuming. It’s just a quick vacuum.

Why pay a professional interior detailing? No, that’s just cleaning it. Truly detailing it is removing any dirt that’s in the pores of the vinyl or in the pores of the leather, and then reconditioning it. It’s blowing out everything out from underneath the seats.

It’s shampooing the carpet. It’s removing any packed in dirt to the carpet. That’s like saying to clean your clothes, you just kind of like wave them in the air for a little bit, and now they’re clean.

That’s exactly what that’s like. You’re like the queen of analogy.
