Hello and welcome back to the Bespoke Refinement Podcast, the number one Kansas City car detailing service. Guys, I am your host, founder, owner, and operator Thomas Till. Today we’re going to be talking about a subject that I’ve heard a lot of people asking about online.
I’ve seen it in car groups, racing forums, I’ve seen it in YouTube videos, I’ve been seeing it talked about everywhere, and I’d just like to give my take on it. So everyone’s asking what the hype is with a Porsche. Why is it that in the last 15 years suddenly everybody wants to own a Porsche 911?
I grew up wanting supercars, learning about supercars, studying them, and I never really believed that the Porsche 911 was a supercar. To me it was just always an affordable sports car. And in 2017 I had a client who had purchased a Porsche 911 Turbo S and he had me drive the car across town and he allowed me to have some fun with it.
And I realized that these are the most well-built cars and well-sorted cars I’d ever driven. By 2017 I had already driven Lamborghini Gallardos, I had driven Murcielagos, Ferrari 360s, Ferrari 458s, and I realized that the Porsche was just a perfectly assembled, well-sorted car. Fast forward two years, I have another client who had purchased one of my Kansas City car packages.
And he had me come to his house to look at his collection, kind of figure out what each Kansas City car detailing service, each car would need. And we quickly discovered that all of his cars were going to need to be completely repaint corrected. And I realized that out of this gentleman’s entire car collection, he had a thing for Porsche.
And I asked him if he was a Porsche collector, if of all the cars he owned Porsche was his favorite, why Porsche was his favorite. And he told me that of all the supercars he’s owned over the years, he’s never had a problem with Porsche. They’ve always been extremely reliable.
And he described to me Porsche as being like a microwave. It always works. You just press the buttons, turn the car on, hit the throttle, and it works.
And he never had to worry about it breaking down. He never had to worry about an interior panel doing something funky like you see on a lot of Ferraris and Maseratis. The car just worked.
So long story short, over the years, I ended up doing other Kansas City car detailing for this client. And I ended up having his Porsche GT2 RS and Porsche GT3 RS parked in my facility. And I had a car show at my shop one night.
And you know, to me, these Porsche 911s were, they were cool. They had big wings on the back. I knew that they were worth, you know, between $300,000 to $500,000.
But I didn’t realize how popular these 911s were. And I had this car show at my shop one night. And I had this huge crowd of people around these two 911s.
And that was when I realized that the Porsche 911 is an extremely popular sports car. Not just amongst the older generation, you know, the guys that are retired, boomers that go golfing every day, but even guys in their mid, late 20s, like me, that just appreciate a great sports car. Through COVID specifically, I really remember the Porsche 911 market just exploding.
You know, guys that were buying 991 Turbo S’s for 70 grand are now selling them for 140 grand. And it seems like the social media influencer space really began to capture the Porsche 911 market. I’m not sure if it was Porsche’s marketing team.
I’m not sure if it was their exclusive allocation system that they had set up for Porsche owners. But I know that in past years, in the late 2000s, the 911 GT2 RS, the 911 GT3 RS were not necessarily cars that people were just dying to own. In fact, I remember when you could buy a 996 Porsche 911 Turbo X50 for $28,000 to $35,000.
And that’s a car that’s worth over $100,000 now. And they didn’t get any faster. They didn’t get any better.
I just think that people began to realize and appreciate the build quality and the reliability of the Porsche 911. I mean, even the Carrera 2s and the Carrera 4s, they’re all wonderful cars. But these aren’t cars that are extremely neck breaking fast.
These are cars that are extremely well sorted. Over the years, I’ve been blessed to work on some of the coolest cars with my Kansas City Car Detailing Services. And I can tell you that an extremely popular car that I find in any collection is a Porsche 911.
Whether it’s a GT2 RS or it’s a 996 Carrera 2, every car collector seems to own the Porsche 911, especially the GT3 RS. I was lucky enough in 2020 to have a Kansas City Car Detailing client who allowed me to go with him to a private track day at Hallett Motor Speedway in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And he ended up taking me around the track in his GT2 RS and then allowing me to drive his GT3 RS around a racetrack very, very aggressively.
And I learned after that track day why the GT3 RS specifically is such a popular track car. It’s because, number one, you really can’t crash it. It has so many different computers and electronic systems that allow the throttle response to change and the way that it allocates power to the rear wheels when throwing it around a corner to keep the car stable enough to keep a smooth drift through a turn without giving it too much power to spin the car out.
And same goes with GT2 RS. If you don’t know a whole lot about the different GT cars for Porsche, a GT2 RS is essentially a 911 Turbo with more power, bigger turbos, a more stiff and rigid chassis, and an active aero. So prior to me driving these Porsche 911s both on the street and on the track, I had no idea that why the GT2 RS was a half million dollar car.
But now I understand that it is one of the best track weapons ever produced. Guys, thank you so much for tuning in to this episode of the Bespoke Automotive Refinement Podcast.
