Hello Kansas City, welcome back to the Bespoke Refinement podcast. We are your one-stop shop for all Kansas City car detailing services. Guys, I am your host Thomas Thill.
I am the founder, owner, and operator of Bespoke Refinement. Guys, today we’re going to be talking about what types of vehicles are best for driving in the winter. There are so many different awesome vehicles for driving in the winter, driving in the snow.
There are also some vehicles that are really not too good for driving in the snow. Even if you have a vehicle that’s high off the ground, you know, it’s not low to the ground, it still may not be the best vehicle for driving in the snow. And the reason that we’re going to be talking about this is because today I was, actually yesterday or the last three days, I’ve been driving around in the snow and I had to help someone push their car out of an intersection where they got stuck.
And then I also watched and saw a lot of other vehicles that had slid off the road or I saw one truck that had completely burned to the ground. It had slid off the road and I think something must have caught fire and this truck just completely burned the ground. So today we’re going to be talking about what are the best vehicles for driving in the winter.
Right now I’m driving my Dodge Durango GT. It’s all-wheel drive. It’s a great vehicle for getting around in lighter snow.
It’s great for driving on icy roads but this is actually the first time I’m driving this vehicle through most of the weather that we’ve had. I’ve been driving around a Jeep Wrangler Sahara and I gotta say I’ve loved it. I mean I’ve gotten to work on a lot of different Kansas City car detailing vehicles over the years and I’ve seen a lot of different vehicles that people use on an everyday basis.
Some of them don’t really make a whole lot of sense for driving year-round. I’ve seen guys that drive Corvettes every day. I actually used to drive a Corvette every day in the snow, in the rain, and it was a very reliable car.
It was great for driving during the summer and the fall and the spring but during the winter time it was really not too good of a car to drive and I actually started my Kansas City car detailing business in the back of that Corvette. Again probably not the smartest thing in the world to do but there are so many different awesome vehicles to drive around in the snow. So I would say at the top of my list is definitely the Jeep that I drove.
That was my first time driving a Jeep Wrangler in the snow and it was getting around better than a lot of trucks and you know in the past I’ve owned a lot of big trucks. I’ve owned a Ram 3500 and I used to drive a lot of those actually back when I worked in the oil field and um they got around great but because of the way the weight is distributed it didn’t really get around in the snow as well as the Jeep. So at the top of my list for a Kansas City car detailing winter vehicles to drive I would definitely say the Jeep Wrangler Sahara.
Top of my list. Next up is going to be the Hummer H2. The reason I love the Hummer H2 is because it is active all-wheel drive.
It’s got a big V8 in it but the way that the weight is distributed amongst that vehicle it’s not front heavy it’s not rear heavy it’s evenly distributed. So you’re not going to be sliding around in the rear because the back of it is lighter like a pickup truck. You are going to have weight evenly distributed amongst the entire vehicle which I think is amazing for driving in the snow.
Another vehicle that I think is amazing for driving in the snow is the Range Rover Defender. I used to own one of these and although it had a lot of little quirky issues like most older Range Rovers do it was a cheat code in the snow. I mean that vehicle got around impeccably.
I could drive it anywhere. I drove it through rivers. I drove it through fields.
I took it rock crawling a couple of different times but I specifically remember how awesome that truck was driving through the snow and it got everywhere I needed it to go and you know it it never failed me in the snow. I think that those are awesome vehicles for driving in the winter and driving in the hills and just all sorts of different snowy and mountainous driving. The next vehicle on the Kansas City Car Detailing list that I have for winter driving is going to be the Subaru Impreza WRX.
Now you’re probably wondering why I just chose a sports car because the Subaru Impreza WRX and the WRX STI are incredible vehicles because they have active all-wheel drive. They can evenly distribute how much power goes to the front and rear wheels so you’re not constantly battling wheel spin in the snow and although they are low to the ground they bust through snow drifts. I owned one of these vehicles for about three years and it never left me stranded in the snow.
It always started right up. It was extremely reliable and even in the harshest of winter storms I was able to get everywhere I needed both in the city and out in the country where I used to live. Guys the other vehicle that I have on the Kansas City Car Detailing winter vehicle list is the Porsche 911 Turbo S. Now this is another one that I’m sure you’re like why is he choosing a Porsche 911 for driving in the snow? Well like the Subaru Impreza WRX the Porsche 911 Turbo is also active all-wheel drive and believe it or not I’ve had more than 10 Kansas City Car Detailing clients who have owned these vehicles and used them as their only car for driving in the snow for driving in the rain.
It is literally the only vehicle that they own and they get everywhere in it that they need to. I’ve had one particular instance where I did drive one in about six inches of snow and it got around impeccably. It was handled well.
It wasn’t sliding in the rear because the engine’s in the back but there’s also a lot of weight in the middle and in the front. It’s evenly distributed so you’re not battling wheel spin. I would say the Porsche 911 Turbo is the perfect one-car solution.
That’s what I refer to as the one-car solution. The only car you need to drive anywhere. I have friends that live in Colorado that do a lot of skiing and they’ll put their ski racks on the tops of these Porsche 911 Turbos and they will drive them up into the mountains in the snow, ski for two or three days, load their skis up back on the roof of the Porsche 911 and then they’ll drive it home.
These Porsche 911 Turbos are incredible cars both for performance and for driving in the snow, for getting around in really harsh winter road conditions.
