Hello Kansas City and welcome back to the Bespoke Automotive Refinement Podcast where we do, we talk about all things cars and detailing and of course Kansas City car detailing because that’s the business that we’re in. Guys, I’m your host Thomas Thill. I’m the founder, owner, and operator of Bespoke Refinement and we are going to continue talking about my new purchase because it’s fun to talk about the thing that you worked hard for and you accomplished and I was really, really, really fortunate to be able to be in a position to do this when I did.
So I guess first we got to start off by talking about the car itself. The first bit was kind of talking about some things I want to do to it but how did I actually end up buying back my dream car that I bought when I was 22 and why did I buy a car back that I sold four years ago? I mean, you know, typically you sell a car, you do it to get something else, to get something better, to get something faster. So how did I, how on earth did I end up buying back the same car twice? Well, the best way that I can explain this is the first time I bought this car I really put myself in a tight financial situation when I bought it but it was the car I wanted.
It had really low miles and obviously at that particular point these cars were at the bottom of their market. This was back in 2019 and this car was very cheap for what it is and I think that’s why now you see a lot of these that are pretty ragged out, pretty beat up because at one point they were very, very low price-wise but this car was it was a dream car. So I bought it and I drove it like any 22-year-old would.
You know, I took really good care of it. I owned the detailing business at that point so, you know, the car didn’t, didn’t get dirty. I always made sure the paint was really well taken care of.
I made sure that the maintenance was always up to date but I drove it. I put a lot of miles on this car and I ended up selling this car in 2023 to the guy who I later ended up buying it back from. I sold the car because I wanted to make some business moves and I thought, you know, I think I can sell this car and in 10 years maybe, or 10 years, maybe in five years I can buy something back that’s faster and newer and funner.
And so prior to that point I hadn’t really been around a whole lot of exotic cars. I’d worked on, you know, a couple Ferraris. I’d driven a Huracan.
I’d driven a GT3 and I’d driven a 458. But this is like, in the loosest of terms of driving them, like I’m more starstruck that I’m even behind the driver’s seat of one of these cars and I am really paying attention to what I’m driving. So fast forward, moved to Kansas City, start the business and working on a Ferrari for me is no longer a starstruck moment, you know.
I’m working on one this week, I’m gonna be working on one next week and the week after that. So I started really paying attention to these cars when I would drive them, you know, when the customer would flip me the key and say, hey, drive to Crosstown or, you know, I’d be on the Ferrari rally and, you know, someone say, up take my 430 down the mountain, you know. We started paying closer attention to those things and I quickly began to realize how great the C6 Z06 was because of the kind of car that I liked.
I didn’t like the kind of cars that I thought I wanted, which were the, you know, the Porsche 911 Turbos that have the beautifully well-made interiors and they’re tight and they do exactly what you want to do. And ultimately, the car that I was planning on buying was a 911 Turbo S. And so, a couple months ago, I had a client who bought one and ended up driving it. Fell in love with the way the car looked, but when I drove it, I fell out of love with it immediately because it did exactly what it was supposed to do.
There wasn’t like a this car wants to kill me factor. And if you’re not a car person and you hear that, you think, oh, that’s probably a good thing. But to me, when I’m looking for something in a car, like a secondary car, like a fun car, I don’t want something that is luxurious and comfortable and quiet and smooth.
Like, yeah, in a car that I drive every day, absolutely, 100%, that’s what I would. I don’t want a car that is ratty and rough and you hear everything on the daily commute, but if I’m going to spend thousands of dollars, tens of thousands of dollars, or even $100,000 on a car that is going to be driven on the weekends, spirit driving, all that, like, I want something that really, like, if I don’t know how to drive it, it could get ugly. It could get hairy.
So, as I started driving some of these clients’ cars, and as I’m driving this 911 Turbo, I’m like, man, this just isn’t what I wanted. I wanted something raw. And I always remembered the way that this car felt.
It was rigid. It was tight. You go over the smallest bump and you feel it, not in the way of, like, the suspension’s going bad, but you feel it in the way of the whole body doesn’t flex.
It just all stays together as one, and that makes driving this car so much easier when you’re cornering, when you’re, you know, weaving it out of traffic, or whatever. It is a raw car. So, I ended up reaching out to the guy who I’d sold the car to, and, you know, I don’t know if he was ready to sell the car.
You know, he made it clear to me, like, I don’t have to sell it, but I’ll sell it back to you. And so, we ended up making a deal happen on it, and I would say that the best thing that he did to this car, everything he did to it, um, was had the engine and transmission completely refreshed. So, now the car is a 600 wheel horsepower heads cam build.
It’s a very mild cam. I mean, the cam isn’t one that you feel like you’re gonna, you don’t feel like it’s gonna, it’s chopping so bad that you can’t drive it. You know, it’s, I’m still learning how to get it out off of a, from a stop, but, um, I’m getting used to it.
I think I’ve almost gotten used to it now, but, um, it is incredibly, incredibly fast. Um, and, I mean, obviously did the paint years ago, so, and it held up really well. So, paint wise, car doesn’t really need anything.
Um, I think I will end up at some point respraying the front bumper just because it’s, it’s, it’s got some, uh, it’s got, it’s that I need to do to the car, but all at all, it’s, it’s turned out, turned out really, really nice. And he did a very good job at making sure that this car looked incredible.
