Hello, Kansas City. Welcome back to the Bespoke Automotive Refinement podcast. We are so glad that you joined us today.
Today, we have the one and only Thomas Thill, the founder and creator of Bespoke Automotive Refinement, the premier Kansas City car detailing business. Thank you so much for joining us today. Thank you so much for having me.
I just love coming on here and talking about all of the different Kansas City car detailing packages and services that we offer. Before we begin, can you run us through just a little bit about what Bespoke Automotive Refinement offers those in Kansas City? We have so many different packages. So for starters, we have a basic detail package.
So we have our maintenance detail package. We have our complete detail package and we have our ultimate detail package. And all of these packages that we offer offer different services.
So, for instance, our maintenance detail is just an exterior wash and an interior clean. It’s not really a full detail. So we don’t we don’t shampoo the carpets.
We don’t polish the paint. We clean it and we maintain it. That’s the term maintenance detail.
The complete detail is a little bit more in depth. We shampoo the carpet. We go a little bit more deeper into the wheel wells.
Clean the wheels, barrels, the wheel faces. Go a little bit further on both the exterior and the interior. And then the ultimate detail is just that it’s an ultimate detail.
So we perform a full interior and exterior detail. Hand wash the car. Clean the wheel barrels, the wheel wells.
Deep clean the interior. Get rid of any stains, any smells. Clean the headliner.
And then we perform a single step polish, which is a gloss enhancement to the paint. And we apply a ceramic sealant to the paint to ensure that the vehicle is protected through all of the harsh winter elements and even the summer heat as well. So one service that you offer is ceramic coating.
And today, while we were shopping, you bought some shoes and they were trying to pitch you this product that you could get to protect your shoes. And you’re like, no, good. I actually do this for a living.
Can you tell us a little bit about what ceramic coating is and what it can do for your items? Sure. So a ceramic coating is essentially a hydrophobic coating that doesn’t. Hydrophobic means
hydrophobic means water doesn’t stick to it.
So if you’ve ever had a ceramic pan like a cooking pan when you go to clean it and you run it over underwater, none of the water sticks to it. It beads up and it rinses off. Well, that’s what we can apply to the exterior vehicle.
But we also offer it for an interior as well. So we can apply it to the leather. We can apply it to the fabric suede Alcantara.
So that’s what I was talking about today when we were shoe shopping and I bought a pair of shoes. They tried to have me purchase this coating to put on my shoes. And I was like, well, I already offer this as one of my Kansas City car detailing services.
So what are some things that you could ceramic coat? Oh, wow. Well, you can ceramic coat about anything. So you can ceramic coat shower glass.
You can ceramic coat countertops like granite countertops. You can ceramic coat window glass. You can ceramic coat fabric.
So, you know, a lot of people, if they buy an expensive couch, an expensive cloth couch, they’ll apply a ceramic coating to the cloth. You can apply a ceramic coating to leather. There’s so many different things that you can apply ceramic coating to when purchasing one of our Kansas City car detailing packages.
I would say the most famous thing about ceramic coats outside of a vehicle exterior is the glass. So the glass is ceramic coating. The glass is a huge benefit because the water beads up.
It runs off. So when you’re in the middle of a rainstorm, you don’t have to use your windshield wipers. The water doesn’t stick to the glass.
So you can see way more clearly during a rainstorm and a snowstorm. And when you’re driving your vehicle, whether you’re driving through the south or you’re driving in Kansas during the summer, get a ton of bugs on the windshield. You know, at nighttime, it’s really hard to see out of the windshield instead of having to pull over and squeegee the windshield off at a gas station.
You can just hit your windshield washer fluid and it’ll wipe the bugs right off the windshield with your windshield wipers. So that is the most famous thing that we coat. But I’ve coated all sorts of things.
I mean, I’ve ceramic coated my shoes. I had a Gucci jacket that I ceramic coated. I’ve ceramic coated countertops before.
I’ve ceramic coated shower glass, residential window glass before. It all can be done. So if somebody wanted to get their vehicle ceramic coated, what does the process look like for that? Like, are there other things you need to get done beforehand? Can you just do ceramic coating?
What does that look like for somebody wanting to get a Kansas City car detailing service of ceramic coating? Well, at a bare minimum, you’re going to want to have the paint completely decontaminated before coating.
You don’t want a ceramic coat over any contaminants like iron, fallout, any sort of etchings on top of the clear coat, because it’s essentially going to stick to another chemical. Thus, the coating isn’t going to last as long. So at a bare minimum, we’re going to have to clay bar the paint.
I typically won’t ceramic coat anything without polishing it first, because when you clay bar the paint, you put more scratches in it because you’re rubbing a piece of clay all over the paint and it just almost always scratches it. So I will clay bar the paint, and do a single step polish. That’s also going to add a lot more gloss to the paint job.
And then ceramic coat. Typically, a lot of customers opt for a two stage paint correction. They want the paint as perfect as possible before coating it, because once you ceramic coat it, all of those imperfections are sealed in.
So you really want to make sure that it’s clean and clear. Kind of like if you ever do your phone and you get one of those protectors for it. Yes.
There’s like one speck of dirt. It creates a bubble. That is a perfect analogy.
Yes. You want to remove any imperfections on it prior to coating it. And the same thing with scratches.
You know, you can put a protector on your iPhone after you’ve had the phone for two years, but it’s going to have little scratches in it that are going to have to be corrected or in that term, we got to put a new screen on it. So it’s always smart to do it when you first get the car. That way, it’s defect free and it’s going to cost you a lot less to have the vehicle perfected than it would a vehicle that’s, you know, several years old with 15, 20,000 miles.
I know that when your grandpa bought his most recent car, he had you come out to western Kansas to ceramic coat it. And especially for him, he lives on a dirt road, the gravel, all those things keep it easier to clean and maintain over time. Absolutely.
Yeah. And even though we are a Kansas City car detailing business, we do travel outside of Kansas City as well for customers if they live around Kansas City or, you know, if they’re willing to pay to have us travel further than that. I travel all over the country to perform this work.
