Hello, Kansas City. Welcome back to the Bespoke Automotive Refinement Podcast. We are your one-stop shop for all things detailing, car detailing, and really just everything about cars.
If you know me, you know that I love cars. I have a passion for detailing. I have a passion for ceramic coating, and as a Christian man, I have to work really hard to not worry too much about worshiping cars because it’s just my passion.
Well, today, guys, we’re going to be talking about what has happened to car culture in the last 15 years. So, what sparked this conversation? I had a guy, well, let’s back up. So, I’m in a lot of Facebook groups, car groups, relating to previous cars that I’ve owned, and one of the cars that I had was a 2004 Corvette Z06.
It was a C5, and the car had a Kenny Bell supercharger, had the full Kenny Bell setup, and I didn’t know it when I bought it that it was actually a really, really rare car. I honestly treated it like it was any other boosted C5 Corvette Z06. It wasn’t really like a collector in my eyes, but I had the car for a couple years and traded it in and bought my dream car, which at the time was a C6 Z06 Corvette, which I believe is actually the best Corvette ever made.
But fast forward to today, I was scrolling through Facebook, and someone had posted in the comments section that if anyone had ever owned a Kenny Bell C5 Z06, and there were probably 200 comments in this post, but no one actually owned one. So, there were people that were saying, yeah, I saw one at a car show, or yeah, you know, I knew a guy who knew a guy who had one, and yeah, I was kind of shocked by that. You know, C5 Z06s are definitely uncommon, but I wouldn’t consider one rare, and I wouldn’t consider a supercharged one a collector car.
You know, it’s more of a modern hot rod, if anything. So, I put a couple of pictures in the comments section, and yeah, I said this was my, this was my 04 Torch Red C5 Z06 with a Kenny Bell supercharger. It still had the the Kenny Bell aftermarket hood, which no one could really ever, like, it was the, it was everyone’s favorite hood.
They didn’t make, the only way you could get that hood was if you had a Kenny Bell kit, because it came with that hood. So, it was a rare look on a car. But, you know, I sent the message, I commented on the post, whatever.
What about my day? And then, about an hour ago, I got a message from someone. The guy said, can you send me more info on your car? And I was, I was so weirded out by that. Initially, I thought, you know, is this guy trying to, like, track me down? Like, like, I genuinely thought this guy was, like, trying to or, you know, steal my, my, you know, figure out what the VIN number was on the car so he could steal it from either me or whoever owned the car currently.
I was, I was very weirded out by it. I said, well, I said, here’s the info I can give you, and I was very nice about it, you know, and so I sent him photos. He sends me a picture back of his old one, or his current one, and he said, yeah, he said, um, I’m trying to put together a list of names and a list of cars to bring all of the Kinney Bell Z06 owners together because, you know, they’ve all kind of scattered.
And I thought, man, like, that’s something at one point that, you know, I would have never questioned. If someone wanted my info on my car, I’d gladly give it to them. Um, I would, you know, I want to talk to them about my car.
I would want to give them as much information as possible, but my brain immediately went to this guy is trying to steal from me. This guy’s trying to, you know, take my car. He’s trying to, he’s trying to steal my car.
And so it, it just, it really made me realize, like, man, like, we live in a, we live in a unique time with car culture where, um, cars are no longer, or very seldom are they used to bring people together like they once were. This one interaction seemed so, uh, seemed like such a sweet moment that it, it, it hit me pretty quickly that these are things that used to happen pretty regularly. And now it’s like a dime a dozen, something like this happened, you know? Um, so anyways, just, it was a very, it was a very interesting experience talking to someone like that about my old car.
All he wanted to know was, you know, where’d you buy it from? Uh, how many miles did it have on it? You know, this guy was trying to track down previous owners of these cars to, to have a reunion of it. Obviously, you know, I told him, I’m like, well, I haven’t had mine in gosh, it’s been six years since I’ve had that car. Um, which is crazy to think about, but it’s been six years since I had that car.
So, you know, I didn’t, I didn’t really have much info for him on it, but, um, anyways, it was just, it was a very interesting experience and, you know, it was, it was, it was a little disheartening thinking about my immediate response to it, to him, but also it was really cool to think about maybe after all the car, the car, car culture isn’t completely gone and it’s not completely hopeless.
